Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems: Internal Auditing

Specialty Technical Consultants (STC)

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems: Internal Auditing is designed to help organizations conduct compliance audits of their occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). This guide is suitable for assessing compliance with most OHSMS models, including ISO 45001 (which replaces OHSAS 18001) and ANSI Z10.

To properly maintain their OHSMS, organizations must periodically conduct internal audits according to pre-established audit criteria. They must document the audit results and use them to evaluate the effectiveness of their OHSMS. This guide supports the audit process by providing an audit checklist containing a standard series of audit criteria and detailed notes covering each key element of an OHSMS. Areas covered include context and scope, leadership and worker participation, planning, support, operation, evaluation and review, and improvement.

The guide can be used either by in-house health and safety, audit, or quality managers, or by outside consultants.

It is structured as a standard audit guide, including the following parts:

• Introduction, providing a discussion of applicability and OHSMS standards, and key definitions of terms.
• Pre-audit Preparation, providing lists of documents and records to review prior to conducting an audit, and items to have available for review during an audit.
• Rulebook, providing audit criteria based on the key elements of most OHSMS models, with guide notes to be used by the auditor to assess conformance with the criteria.
• Scoresheet, allowing quick recording of the organization’s compliance status.
